Five tips to help you build your stress resilience in the workplace

  1. Be aware of your extreme thoughts and learn how to control them. Allowing your healthy thoughts to turn extreme can produce tremendous pain that leaves you powerless against stress. If you fear the worst is going to happen, look realistically at your situation and challenge your extreme thoughts as irrational and overly negative.
  2. Be aware of your inflamed emotions and learn how to regulate them. The initial stages of stress often begin with an inflamed emotion. If left unprocessed, the emotion will spiral out of control, hijacking you into a state of stress. Learn to regulate your feelings by acknowledging them, understanding where they come from, and finding a healthy way of expressing them (such as venting to a colleague or friend or journaling).
  3. Discern where and when a personal boundary needs to be set. Although many people find it difficult to say "no" or to ask to be treated differently, the ability to set healthy boundaries can radically reduce stress. Build your courage and communication skills so that you can set and enforce your boundaries with others in a firm, yet sensitive, way.
  4. Find supportive friends who can listen empathetically and provide objective feedback. Anyone can make self-sabotaging decisions that lead to stress. Being accountable to a trusted friend can help you to avoid bad choices or engaging in inappropriate conduct. If you don't have such a confidante in your life, contact a health-care professional through your Employee Assistance Plan (EAP).
  5. Devote time and energy to self-care. Self-care activities provide comfort, relaxation and fun. They can include exercise, having a massage, going camping, laughter and unguarded times with family or friends. Healthy self-care activities will rejuvenate you, give you a renewed perspective on life's challenges and inspire you with hope that you can overcome them.
